Active lifestyle the reason for my longevity, says Tun M

PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who turns 100 today (July 10), credits an active lifestyle for his longevity.

Speaking during an interview broadcast live on his social media, Dr Mahathir said he remains physically and mentally engaged, continuing to ride horses and cycle regularly, which he believes are key to his enduring health and sharpness.

He recounted an episode during a trip to Argentina where he rode a horse up a mountainous trail, describing it as a challenging but rewarding experience.

"I believe it has to do with being active. I don't just sit around or stay in comfortable places. I do various activities; I go for walks, I ride horses, and cycle," he said.

Dr Mahathir, who is the country's longest-serving Prime Minister, urged the youth to work hard and focus on their studies.

"Previously at school, I always aimed for being number 1. But when I studied medicine, I was not the best student. So, I worked hard to compete with the other students. I have to read the textbooks many times, even memorising the pages and pictures. So, when I took the examinations, I could see the pages," he shared.

"So my advice to the youth, if they do not want to be left behind, they need to work hard," said Dr Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir held office from 1981 to 2003 and returned for a second term from 2018 to 2020.
