Modernise police to meet future challenges, says NGO

KUALA LUMPUR: The police force needs to be modernised to meet current and future security challenges, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said a modern police force must not only be professional and efficient but also grounded in integrity, transparency and care for its personnel.

"We must reimagine policing in this country to meet current and future security challenges," he said on Saturday (July 5).

He said the police should be equipped with the latest tools and skills to tackle cybercrime, financial fraud and trans-national threats.

"Investment in digital infrastructure, AI-powered crime analytics, body-worn cameras and advanced forensic tools is critical," he said, adding that officers must also be trained continuously to operate effectively in a high-tech environment.

Lee said that public trust must be earned through integrity and transparency.

"Strengthening the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC), institutionalising transparent investigations and adopting a zero-tolerance stance on corruption are essential," he said.

Calling for deeper engagement with communities, Lee said the police should not operate in isolation.

"Community policing and open dialogue with civil society can build bridges and foster mutual respect between the police and the people," he added.

He also called for merit-based recruitment and transparent promotions.

"Officers must be selected based on character and competence, with thorough background checks.

"Promotions must be based on performance and integrity, not just seniority," he added.
