Car crash kills 7, including 2 police officers, in Britain

LONDON, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed in a car collision in Cleveland, Britain, early Saturday morning, local police said.

The fatalities included "two serving Cleveland Police officers who were in a marked police vehicle and five members of the public who were traveling in a Volkswagen Passat," police said in a statement.

"The Passat was traveling the wrong way along the A66 and collided with a police vehicle that was traveling on the same road in the right direction," the statement said, adding that all occupants of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.

In a separate statement, police identified the two officers as PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on social media that he was "devastated" to hear that the two officers had lost their lives while on duty in Cleveland, along with five members of the public.
