Parents of dead disabled girl in remand


MELAKA: The biological mother and stepfather of a disabled girl, who died in a suspected case of physical abuse, have been remanded for seven days.

The remand order, which lasts until June 30, was issued by Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman at the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh here.

The couple, aged 36 and 38, arrived at the court compound in a police vehicle.

It is learnt that the nine-year-old victim, the second of three siblings, was unable to walk.

On Monday, Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said police were notified of the girl’s death by a doctor from a private hospital around 9.45am.

He said the child was sent to the hospital by her stepfather, a restaurant helper.

Apart from suffering a broken leg, doctors also discovered brui­ses on her head and body.

The victim died soon after she arrived at the emergency ward.
