SPAN working with operators to ensure efficient use

PETALING JAYA: As the weather heats up and temperatures soar, the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has its work cut out to address water overconsumption.

These include working with water operators to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) through infrastructure upgrades and getting industries to reuse water and harvest rainwater.

SPAN’s corporate communications and consumer affairs director Mohd Fazil Ismail, who disclosed this, said the body is implementing measures to ensure sustainable water consumption mainly during periods of increased demand.

“We focus on improving efficiency, encouraging the use of alternative water sources and promoting water conservation practices,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Mohd Fazil said SPAN is implementing efficiency targets for water operators, focusing on reducing non-revenue water through infrastructure upgrades and improved management practices such as leak repairs and system pressure optimisation.

“A federal grant of RM2.525bil has been allocated to assist in these efforts,” he said.

Mohd Fazil said the body is also championing the use of alternative water sources.

“By engaging with large-scale consumers like industrial facilities and data centres, we encourage the adoption of water reuse systems and rainwater harvesting.

“We’re developing guidelines for sustainable water management in data centres, aiming for completion this June,” he added.

This initiative includes promoting recycled water for industrial and non-potable uses by reusing effluent from sewage treatment plants.

Mohd Fazil also said public education is a central component of the commission’s efforts.

“The SPAN WaterWise Programme involves schools and communities in fostering water-saving habits through interactive activities.

“Our goal is to create a water-conscious society,” he said, adding that it also leveraged digital platforms to share water efficiency messages during peak usage times.

“The Water Efficient Products Labelling Scheme helps consumers choose products that reduce water use at home.

“Collaboration with NGOs and local authorities extend SPAN’s educational reach,” he added.

Mohd Fazil said managing water resources is a shared responsibility.

“While we strengthen regulatory frameworks and infrastructure, the active participation of all stakeholders – from government to individual consumers – is essential for sustainable water management,” he added.
