Gerik bus crash: Police record statement of teacher for posting offensive remarks

IPOH: Police have recorded the statement of a teacher accused of posting offensive remarks about the bus accident that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on the East-West Highway in Gerik.

Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin said that the investigation is nearly complete, with only the medical report from Seri Manjung Hospital pending.

“We have already recorded the statement and seized his mobile phone to assist in the investigation. The investigation paper is almost complete, pending the medical report from the hospital,” he said during a press conference on Thursday (June 19).

He added that the report, once received, will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

When asked about the details of the medical report, he declined to comment further but said the medical evaluation is likely psychiatry-related.

Earlier, a Facebook post by an account bearing the name “Khalid Yunus” sparked public outrage, after alleging that the 15 UPSI students who died in the tragic accident had "died in disgrace".

The post further claimed that the victims were not among the faithful, as they had passed away while still owing debt to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).

However, the post has since been deleted, and the teacher involved has issued a public apology, claiming to suffer from schizophrenia.

The Perak Education Department has instructed a school to prepare a full report concerning one of its teachers, who allegedly posted offensive remarks on social media about the tragedy.

State education, higher education, youth and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said that a full report would be prepared by the principal of the secondary school involved, adhering to Education Ministry guidelines.

He said that initial investigations confirmed that the Facebook account responsible for the insensitive post belonged to a teacher at the school.
