Prime enhances disaster preparedness, says Fahmi

CYBERJAYA: To improve disaster preparedness during public emergencies, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has launched the Mobile Integrated Radio and Internet Communication System (Prime).

Fahmi explained that Prime was developed by MCMC and acts as a strategic support system to ensure communication during emergency operations.

"Prime is an integrated communication system supporting operations by the MCMC and rescuers during emergencies and public disasters

"Prime is not just a vehicle; it is a moving integrated communication system combining technologies such as satellite, cellular, mobile radio, Wi-Fi, and drones," Fahmi said at the launch at the MCMC centre of excellence in Cyberjaya on Monday (June 16).

Fahmi stated that Prime provides reliable and flexible communication connectivity according to operational needs in challenging locations.

"In situations where communications are obstructed or limited, Prime facilitates critical communication for rescue coordination, aid management, and information delivery by related industries.

"This ensures a fast and effective response, even in remote places or areas with poor coverage," he added.

As a specially equipped vehicle, Prime is outfitted with satellite, cellular, two-way radio, Wi-Fi, and drone technology, allowing seamless communication in remote areas.

In a press conference later, Fahmi said each Prime unit costs RM1mil, and the first unit will be tested during the Northeast Monsoon season in October.

"Maybe we can conduct some dry runs or tests in October, in states facing the Northeast monsoon season," he added.

Fahmi mentioned that the usage and effectiveness of Prime will be monitored for continuous improvement.

So far, one Prime vehicle has been deployed, and two more are being developed in phases.

MCMC stated that the first Prime vehicle will be stationed at its headquarters to support operations in Peninsular Malaysia.

"Two more units will be completed by the end of this year and will be placed at the MCMC offices in Sabah and Sarawak," added MCMC.

Also present at the launch were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and MCMC executive chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.

Beyond disaster relief, MCMC stated that Prime will support community outreach programmes like the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), serving as a digital hub to provide internet connectivity and enable community activities at targeted locations.
