Speaker calls on MPs to promote healthy lifestyle through Larian Cergas

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has called on all MPs to organise Larian Cergas programmes in their respective constituencies to promote a healthy lifestyle among lawmakers and the public.

He said the inaugural 5km run held at the Parliament grounds Saturday (July 25) marked the beginning of the initiative, which would be monitored for implementation in all parliamentary constituencies.

"I will monitor the progress of this initiative to ensure its implementation in all constituencies.

"We will then compile the total running distance from all constituencies, from Perlis to Sabah and Sarawak. Perhaps we can break a world record with all MPs participating," he told reporters after taking part in Larian Cergas Parlimen 2026 here Saturday.

Also present were Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah and MPs from various political parties.

Johari said the programme aimed to strengthen ties among MPs regardless of political affiliation, while encouraging them to lead by example in adopting a healthy lifestyle.

He said the initiative was also for the benefit of the people, adding that maintaining good health was the priority.

The initiative complemented existing efforts in Parliament, including the sugar-free day observed every Wednesday and mandatory health screenings for MPs.

Johari said the inaugural Larian Cergas Parlimen received encouraging response, with more than 600 participants from various states taking part.

"This is a good start and I am confident programmes like this will continue to grow in all parliamentary constituencies," he said. - Bernama
