Gerik bus crash: Fourteen UPSI students, bus attendant killed in accident


IPOH: Fourteen students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and a bus attendant were among the identified victims killed after the bus they were travelling in collided with another vehicle along the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur-Barat, JRTB).

Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon stated that out of the 15 victims who died, 13 passed away at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

"The fatalities include 10 females and 5 males, and the deceased have been taken to the forensics department at Gerik Hospital. Meanwhile, there are 33 injured victims, with seven in the red zone (critical), 20 in the yellow zone (moderate), and six in the green zone (minor)," she said in a statement.

"The current hospitalisation status is that 29 injured victims are being treated at Gerik Hospital, four injured victims are at Baling Hospital, and the 15 deceased victims are at the Forensic unit of Gerik Hospital."

Earlier, it was reported that a total of 48 people were involved in the crash, including 42 students, a bus driver, an attendant, and four occupants from the other vehicle.

The accident occurred when the bus overturned and the car veered into a ditch, with both vehicles heading from Jeli towards Gerik.
