Gerik bus crash: Dashcam owner gives footage to police

IPOH: Dashcam footage of the tragic bus crash on the East-West Highway where 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) were killed has been given to the police.

Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin said that they would record the statement of the dashcam owner soon and that the footage would serve as evidence to determine the cause of the accident.

"We have submitted the recording to the investigation officer to review," he told reporters at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital forensic unit on Monday (June 9).

He said the footage could reveal the speed of the bus and road conditions at the time of the accident.

Noor Hisam said they believe the bus was speeding and that the guardrail penetrated the bus from the front.

He added that most victims sustained injuries to their left shoulders when the bus crashed and landed on its left.

In the video, the bus is seen speeding past before toppling onto its side and crashing into the guardrail on the left.

The vehicle from which the footage was taken manages to stop in time, without hitting the bus.

When asked about survivors' claims that the bus was speeding and they could smell something burning, Noor Hisam said they had received the information but could not reveal more as it would compromise the investigation.

He also said that the stretch of road where the crash occurred was on an incline and poorly lit, and the incident happened around midnight after rain.

"From my initial observation, there were no visible road lines and it was completely dark.

"We are still investigating if the accident was caused by human error or technical issues. All angles will be considered.

"This was indeed a serious accident. Fortunately, the bus did not break through the guardrail as there is a ravine on the other side," he said.
