Immediate action taken to repair subsidence on Penang road, says Zairil

GEORGE TOWN: Temporary measures have been taken to fix the land subsidence along Jalan Batu Kawan (P149), said state Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.

Zairil said Penang Development Corporation (PDC) has taken immediate action to apply a premix patch to raise the road level and has installed warning signs indicating the 'uneven road' to prevent accidents.

He said PDC received complaints from the public regarding the subsidence on P149 Jalan Batu Kawan on Thursday (June 5).

"Initial investigations revealed that the subsidence occurred at the junction between the existing road and a newly constructed bridge.

"The actual cause of the subsidence is still under investigation by PDC and the contractor," he said in a statement on Friday (June 6).

Zairil said the contractor will conduct excavation works to identify the cause of the subsidence and then implement permanent repair work with additional materials such as “basal reinforcement using geotextile”.

"Other measures will be taken as well for stronger road stability to ensure that the subsidence does not occur in the future.

"All repair costs will be borne entirely by the contractor as the work is still within the defects liability period," he said.

Photos of the affected area went viral on Thursday (June 5) showing Fire and Rescue Department personnel cordoning off the damaged section of the road, which appeared to have sunken in.
