KUALA LUMPUR: Forums play an essential role towards ensuring voices of the people remain at the heart of policymaking, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president cited the ASEANPEOPLES@ASEAN2025 CSO Forum, noting how it is a timely and vital initiative that brings together diverse voices to shape a more inclusive, people-centred Asean.

“On behalf of MCA, we are proud to assist in the event by providing Wisma MCA as the venue for this meaningful engagement.

“My sincere appreciation goes to Jerald Joseph, convening chair of the forum, for his leadership and commitment in driving this regional dialogue.

“Their contributions underscore the urgency of fostering a united Asean that prioritises human rights, equitable development, and regional cooperation,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

Ambassador of the European Union to Malaysia Rafael Daerr, Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly chair Tan Sri Johari Abdul and Suhakam chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hishamudin Md Yunus were in attendance at the forum.

Dr Wee also interacted with participants from other countries in the Asean bloc.

“It is not just a gathering of minds but it also reflects the growing role of civil society in shaping a more people-centric Asean, where collaboration and shared values pave the way for a stronger regional community,” he said.

He also had a pleasant surprise when meeting Esther Teo, who is actively involved with Family Frontiers Malaysia.

“She is also the mother of Mia Teo Herrizon, whom I assisted in obtaining citizenship.

“The family is now based in Cyberjaya,” Dr Wee said.

“According to Esther, Mia, who used to be very shy, is becoming more confident in her own skin.

“The 10-year-old now enjoys playing badminton, 24 festive drums and storytelling,” he added.
