Citizenship graft case: MACC free to probe Home Ministry even '25 hours a day', says Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail fully supports the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in performing its duties, following the recent arrest of two Home Ministry officers and a third individual over a graft case linked to fast-tracking citizenship applications.

The Home Minister said the MACC is free to conduct investigations involving any personnel under his ministry and its agencies.

“As far as I’m concerned, at the ministry level and in my capacity as the minister, whether it's officers in the ministry or within our agencies, the MACC has '25 hours a day' to come in and investigate,” he told a press conference after the ministry's monthly assembly here on Tuesday (May 13).

“Let them carry out their duties in line with their responsibilities. That has always been my position, and I remain consistent," he said.

On Thursday (May 8), the MACC confirmed the arrest of two ministry officers and one civilian during an operation the day before.

The operation was carried out between 1pm and 5pm in Putrajaya.

The three were detained to assist in investigations following information received on a corruption case linked to the expedited processing of citizenship confirmation applications.

MACC said the arrests are linked to Ops Outlander, an anti-graft operation launched in March to dismantle a syndicate involved in the fraudulent registration of non-citizen births as Malaysian citizens using falsified documents.

The Home Ministry is cooperating fully with MACC in this investigation, the statement added.
