Teenager found dead after falling into river in Perak


IPOH: A 15-year-old girl was found dead after falling into a river at Kampung Beting Luas, Pantai Remis, Perak.

A Civil Defence Force spokesman identified the victim as Shirley Ngu Syiok Yee.

"The victim went for a walk on Friday (May 9) near the Sungai Raja Hitam jetty when she fell due to the rotted jetty floor.

"A distress call was made by Pantai Remis assemblywoman Wong May," he said in a statement on Saturday (May 10).

The rescue team arrived at the scene at about 11.30pm, and around 7.52am the following day, the victim's body was found and brought to the mangrove coastline.

"She was pronounced dead by Health Ministry personnel, and her remains were handed over to the police for further action," he added.

Meanwhile, Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the victim is believed to have drowned around 7.32pm on Friday.

"She was found floating by the riverbank, about 1km from where she was last believed to have fallen.

"The body was recovered by the PBS Changkat Keruing and PBS Pantai Remis teams, who were conducting a river search at around 7.50am this morning," he said.

"The body was transported by boat to the jetty," he said.

He added that the operation officially ended at 9.45am.
