Body of croc attack victim found in Sipitang after five-day search

KOTA KINABALU: After an intensive five-day search, the body of a man who was attacked by a crocodile in Sipitang has been found.

The body of Pungut Madin, 52, was discovered by the public at 12.20pm on Monday (May 5) in a Sungai Megalong tributary near Kampung Banting.

Authorities said that only partial remains were found.

The Fire and Rescue Department deployed a drone to survey the area before a team entered the narrow waterway to retrieve the body. The victim's remains were then handed over to the police for further investigation.

Pungut went missing at about 3.30pm on Thursday (May 1).

In the search, teams from the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force (APM), police and local villagers covered roughly 8km of the river.

With the recovery of the body, the search operation was officially called off at 2.30pm on Monday.

Crocodile sightings are not uncommon in such rivers. Authorities have reminded the public to remain alert and report any sightings to relevant agencies immediately.
