Solicit projects and you'll be reported to MACC, Sibu councillors told

SIBU: Municipal councillors have been warned that they will be reported to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) if they are found soliciting council projects.

“If you are caught, I will not defend you – I will refer you to the MACC,” council chairman Clarence Ting said on Wednesday (April 30).

Speaking at the council’s full board meeting here, Ting stressed that councillors who are only interested in securing projects should resign immediately.

The current batch of councillors has just recently taken office.

“You are not permitted to have any interest, whether large or small, in council affairs.

"If you have an interest in any projects, you should step down at once. Only then may you apply for them,” he said.

Ting also urged councillors not to bring their political party agendas into council affairs.

“You were appointed by your parties to serve as councillors, but party matters have no place here.

"Your responsibilities will not be assigned based on party affiliation. Let us work together as a team,” he said.

Ting, who has been chairman since 2019, also reminded councillors that they are not the bosses of the council’s 500 staff members.

“We are here to collaborate with them. Some have been with the council for over 30 years.

"We are not their bosses, we just consult them on council matters,” he added.
