Work on Penang’s LRT from late 2026

GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project will get off the ground in the fourth quarter of next year.

But first, the contractor needs to start soil investigation along the LRT alignment, says Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim.

The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Corp Sdn Bhd chief executive officer said such soil investigation has actually been done before and “the data is already there”.

“It’s not a new thing, but it’s possible that there are some situations or locations that the contractor needs to get fixed,” he said during the Mutiara Line LRT Hari Raya Open House at The Top yesterday.

Mohd Zarif said the last soil investigation was done around 2018, so the contractor needs repeat it.

He said the contractor could finalise the design after the soil investigation was complete as the design would take soil conditions into account.

“After the design is finalised, we have to see if there are utilities that need to be relocated,” he said, adding that utilities on the road reserve will need to be relocated.

“The targeted delivery date is on Dec 31, 2031, so we still have five years to go,” he added.

“By the time we reach 2029, we should be on top of the ‘S curve’ and that brings us for another two years until the end of 2031,” he said.
