Food delivery riders apprehend serial snatch thief in Melaka

MELAKA: A group of food delivery riders successfully apprehended a serial snatch thief following a brief chase, says Melaka police.

State's top cop, Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the incident unfolded when the 31-year-old suspect snatched a belonging from a 70-year-old man outside a supermarket in Malim at around 12.30pm on Wednesday (April 23).

"Police personnel from the state police headquarters and the Malim police station were able to track the suspect near the scene and attempted to arrest him.

"However, the suspect fled the scene on his motorcycle upon spotting the officers when the group of food delivery riders witnessed the commotion and gave chase," he said on Thursday (April 24).

DCP Dzulkhairi added that the riders managed to intercept and surround the suspect, eventually handing him over to the authorities.

"The suspect was successfully detained within approximately 30 minutes after the pursuit," he said.

Further investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in at least five snatch theft cases reported across the state.

“A drug test on the suspect returned positive,” he said.

He added that the suspect has since been remanded for six days to assist with the ongoing investigation.
