Razman demands apology over caricature

IPOH: Perak Opposition Leader Razman Zakaria has demanded a public apology from Perak State Executive Council member Woo Kah Leong during the state assembly sitting.

The Gunung Semanggol assemblyman, suspended from the assembly for six months, expressed regret over the actions of the Pasir Bedamar assemblyman.

Razman alleged on Facebook that Woo used his photo without permission, editing it to resemble a clown, which he described as offensive and insulting.

“Despite being suspended, I continue to follow the proceedings.

"I demand Woo retract the post and apologise during his winding-up speech on Monday (April 21).

“If he fails to do so, I will not hesitate to take legal action and lodge a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” he said.

Razman stated that using his image without consent in a provocative manner is an offence under Section 211 of the Act, which prohibits distributing indecent and offensive content.

He also urged the MCMC to investigate the matter and take appropriate action against Woo.

Razman criticised Perak DAP Chairman Nga Kor Ming for labelling others as immature and childish yet failing to advise the younger leaders within his party.

During his winding-up speech, Woo defended his actions regarding the caricature, allegedly involving Razman's face.

He explained that his action was a form of satire based on facts, which he said is a legitimate aspect of democracy.

He pointed out that there are also satirical expressions not based on facts, which could risk legal action for defamation.

“In democracy, you can use satire and I can oppose it, and at the same time, I can satirise and you can oppose it. This is everyone’s right.

“This is one of the unique features of democracy. I know some people were triggered by the media statement image I posted,” he said.
