Put political win first, Hadi tells Muslims

TAPAH: PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (pic) has called on Muslims to give priority to political victory by postponing plans to perform the umrah or haj.

During his speech at a ceramah in support of the Perikatan Nasional candidate in Ayer Kuning, the Marang MP said Muslims are obliged to appoint fellow Muslims to lead a country, adding that it is a huge responsibility in Islam to choose a leader that follows the Islamic faith.

“Our people, however, chose to perform umrah first, with politics second,” he said in his speech at Kampung Tanjung Keramat here while canvassing support for Perikatan candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek.

Abdul Hadi said Prophet Muhammad had to forgo the umrah or perform the haj prior to the Treaty of Hudaibiyah.

“No matter how great the responsibility, the Prophet prioritised political victory over performing the umrah,” he said in his speech last night.

Abdul Hadi also said the majority of the people in the country are Malays, and that consequently, they have the right to lead.

“But it doesn’t mean that we can deny the rights of the non-Muslims.

“Non-Muslims are allowed to join a government. But ultimate political power must be held by Muslims,” he added.
