Man treated for burns after Bintulu house fire


BINTULU: A man suffered burns to his back while two other people escaped unhurt when a fire occurred at a house in Taman Medan Ginseng, Jalan Sibiyu here.

According to a Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, the victim, Yew Hing Kuong, 65, was given first aid at the scene before he was sent to Hospital Nyabau for further treatment after the incident early yesterday.

“Two other residents, Cheng Guat Sien, 88, and a woman named Lili Rinus, escaped unhurt,” the spokesman said in a statement.

The department received a distress call about the fire at 3.49am and 13 firefighters and an engine from the Bintulu Fire and Rescue station rushed to the scene, located about four kilometres away, Bernama reported.

“The fire involved a semi-permanent structure, which was an additional structure attached to a double-storey terrace house.

“The entire structure, measuring 4.57m x 7.31m, was completely destroyed,” said the spokesman.

The fire was put out by 4.53am and the cause of the fire, along with the losses, were still being investigated.
