Nik Nazmi defeated in PKR division elections


PETALING JAYA: Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad is the biggest casualty in the PKR division polls yesterday while his Cabinet colleagues Fadhlina Sidek and Datuk Fahmi Fadzil secured victories in their outings.

Nik Nazmi, who is also a PKR vice-president, was the Setia­wangsa division chief and the current MP for the Setiawangsa parliamentary constituency.

He registered 563 votes while his challenger and director-actor Datuk Afdlin Shauki obtained 631 votes in the Federal Territories division polls.

In the last party polls in 2022, Afdlin lost the same position to Nik Nazmi.

Communications Minister and PKR information chief Fahmi won unopposed in Lembah Pantai.

Education Minister and Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina, who contested in Penang, emerged as the Nibong Tebal division chief after beating two challengers, Muttaqeen Mustafa and Muhammad Navalan Abdullah.

In a five-cornered race in Bukit Bintang, K. Saraswathy, who is Deputy National Unity Minister and PKR vice-president, was defeated by Anwar Pawan Chik.

Batu lawmaker P. Prabakaran, who recently denied allegations of distributing cash to members ahead of the division polls, lost the Batu PKR chief post to lawyer Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi.

Prabakaran secured 793 votes while Asheeq Ali received 946 votes.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin won unopposed in Bandar Tun Razak.

In Permatang Pauh, Penang, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar won unopposed. Nurul Izzah was the MP for Permatang Pauh and the Prime Minister’s daughter.

Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin won the Bayan Baru division chief post after securing a landslide victory of 1,035 votes against his opponent Cheah Peng Guan who received 425 votes.

In the meantime, Kelantan PKR chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Suparadi Mohd Noor retained his position as the Tanah Merah PKR division chief in the polls held on Friday.

Terengganu PKR chairman Ahmad Nazri Mohd Yusof also managed to retain his position as Kemaman PKR division leader.

The second phase of polling, which runs until today, involves the Federal Territories, Pahang, Penang, Johor and Sabah.

The first phase of voting took place from April 11 to 13, involving Kedah, Perlis, Selangor, Melaka, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Sarawak.

The PKR central leadership polls, including for the Youth and Wanita wings, will be held on May 24.
