Jalur Gemilang gaffe: Sin Chew Daily editors released tonight, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The Chief Editor and Deputy Chief Sub-editor of the Sin Chew Daily newspaper, who were summoned to Bukit Aman on Thursday (April 17) to assist in investigations regarding the publication of an incomplete illustration of the Jalur Gemilang on the newspaper's front page, have been detained.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, stated that both individuals were earlier detained and subsequently released at around 8.20pm.

Their statements were recorded for approximately three hours at the Bukit Aman CID Special Investigation Unit (USJT) headquarters. However, we have detained them to assist further with the investigation.

"They will be released tonight on police bail," he said when contacted.

So far, 40 police reports have been lodged on the matter, said the IGP.

"We are investigating the matter under Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publishing Act 1984," he said.

Sin Chew Daily had earlier issued an apology in three languages for an error in their front-page illustration.

The apology was made in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese.

According to a statement from the Chinese daily, the illustration inadvertently omitted the crescent from the Malaysian flag, which was published on Tuesday (April 15).

"This was an unintentional error made during the design process. We have amended the digital version, and the same notice will be published in the print version as well. We apologise unreservedly to our readers, members of the Malaysian community, and the general public. We regret the error," it said.
