Ratu Naga to be released on police bail today

KUALA LUMPUR: Social media personality and political activist Syarul Ema Rena Abu Saman, widely known as Ratu Naga, is expected to be released on police bail on Friday (April 11).

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said the suspect in her 40s was detained in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, at about 12pm on Thursday (April 10).

"She was detained under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

"She is expected to be released on police bail on Friday after further investigation has been conducted," he said in a statement.

The investigation paper will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor on Friday as well, he added.

"We advised the public not to spread unverified information that could cause public distress and controversy.

"Stern action will be taken against those who spread fake news this week. We advise everyone to check the authenticity of any information before sharing it," he said.

It was reported that Syarul Ema was detained in connection with the video alleging that pupils at a Chinese school in Teluk Intan had sung the national anthem in Mandarin.

Three police reports were lodged on the matter.

ACP Bakri had previously said police had first received a complaint about the three-minute 40-second video on Friday (April 4) at about 7pm.

"The video started with a group of children singing the Perak Anthem, which was then followed by a commentary by a political activist that had caused controversy.

"The person had then raised an issue whereby the National Anthem was sung in another language other than Malay and also claimed that the act had gone against protocol," he said in a statement on Saturday (April 5).

It was reported that Syarul Ema had allegedly accused the Chinese school pupils of disrespecting the national anthem.

Syarul Ema had also apologised on her Facebook page on Friday (April 4) for mishearing the song and removed her post within 10 minutes of uploading it.
