Woman pawns jewellery, tells mum she was robbed instead

KOTA KINABALU: Worried about being scolded by her mother after selling some of her jewellery to pay off a debt, a woman made up a story that she was robbed by two men in the small town of Tandek in northern Kota Marudu district.

However, the 29-year-old woman's robbery tale was uncovered after the police launched an immediate probe on receiving a report from the woman's 49-year-old mother at 9.35pm on Friday (April 5).

Kota Marudu OCPD Supt Simiun Lomudin said Saturday (April 5) that the mother had reported that two unknown men on a motorcycle had kidnapped her daughter in Tandek town.

She claimed that the daughter was injured and lost three gold bracelets and a 916 gold chain.

Supt Simiun said that a police team headed to Kota Marudu Lotong Hospital to meet with the victim and her husband.

After questioning, he said the woman told them that she made up the story of the robbery as she had actually pawned the jewellery to pay off a debt.

"We are still investigating the case. We advise the public not to make any speculation that could affect our investigation," he said.

He urged the public to assist the police in their efforts to combat crime by channelling any information via the MERS 999 or contacting the nearest police station.
