KOTA KINABALU: Floodwaters swamped several houses in Kampung Pengkalan Bukit Garam, Kinabatangan, on Wednesday morning following heavy rainfall in the area.

The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 9.16am and promptly dispatched a five-member team from the Kinabatangan Fire Station to the scene, located about 11km away.

Operations commander PBK II Jasmani Osni led the team, which arrived at 9.35am in a Fire Rescue Tender vehicle to assess the situation and carry out rescue work where needed.

“Upon arrival, our team found that several houses had been affected by floodwaters. Rescue and inspection operations were carried out,” said a department spokesperson in an update to the press on Wednesday (April 2).

No injuries or casualties have been reported.

Kinabatangan Civil Defence Force officer Kapten Ahmad Roslan Mohd Kamel said the situation remains under close observation, although no evacuation has been necessary so far.

“As of 1.30pm, no evacuation has been carried out. Most residents in the area have their own boats, so they’re not too concerned,” he told The Star.

He added that the weather was currently good, and authorities were continuing to monitor and inspect the situation while waiting for conditions to improve.

Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
