New KL Tower management to absorb existing workforce

KUALA LUMPUR: The acquisition of the concession for the Kuala Lumpur Tower will not affect operations or the workforce at the world’s tallest communication tower, says the Communications Ministry.

The ministry, through its frequently asked questions (FAQs) portal, said all employees at Menara KL, who worked with Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB), would be offered employment by the new management company, LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd (LSHSM), starting yesterday.

On why the government changed the tower concession, the FAQ said the previous concession’s period had expired, Bernama reported.

“Most concessions are given for a certain period of time. For example, for a period of 10, 15, or 30 years. When the concession period ends, the government has to reopen the offer so that other companies have the opportunity to compete.

“This ensures transparency and avoids prolonged monopolies by one party,” according to the FAQ.

It announced that the period of the new concession is 20 years, starting April 1, 2025.

The FAQ said five companies had submitted RFPs including MKLSB, whose contract expired on March 31, through the fifth extended interim agreement.

Earlier, MKLSB and Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd issued a joint statement saying that operations at Kuala Lumpur Tower would continue as usual on the second day of Hari Raya despite an ongoing legal dispute over its management.
