Bangkuai backs postal voting for Sabahans outside the state

KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission (EC) should consider allowing Sabahans living outside the state to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming 17th Sabah Election through postal voting.

Gabungan Rakyat Sabah information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai described Sabah Bersih’s call for postal voting as a “great suggestion,” adding that it would ensure greater participation among Sabahans residing outside the state.

“We want all Sabahans, regardless of their location, to participate in the democratic process.

“The Election Commission should seriously consider this to ensure every Sabahan has a fair opportunity to vote,” Bangkuai, who is also Parti Bersatu Sabah information chief, told reporters after launching the MTV FH Idol 2 Digital Album in Donggongon, Penampang, on Saturday (Mar 29).

Sabah Bersih has urged the government to implement postal voting, particularly for those working or studying in West Malaysia and abroad, to prevent logistical challenges from limiting voter turnout.

The electoral watchdog emphasised that postal voting would enhance voter participation and uphold democratic rights.

With the state election expected by September this year, Sabah Bersih stressed the importance of removing barriers that could prevent eligible voters from casting their ballots.

The group also urged the state government to announce the dissolution of the Sabah State Assembly early so that ‘outstation’ Sabahans can make necessary arrangements to return home.

Bangkuai acknowledged that while the timing of the election remains a key factor, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor would carefully consider all aspects before making an announcement.

“There is still ample time to refine the electoral process, it is only March. But of course, the timing is important, and I believe the Chief Minister will take many factors into account before making a decision,” he said.

As discussions on electoral procedures continue, Sabahans have been encouraged to stay informed and prepared for the upcoming polls.
