AN orchard owner in Kluang, Johor is devastated after a herd of elephants destroyed more than 3,000 of his banana plants, reported China Press.

Drone footage of the incident showed some 40 elephants helping themselves to bananas and palm fruits at the orchard in Kahang.

The animals left behind thousands of tumbled banana plants and huge piles of faeces.

Orchard owner Huang Zhi Qing said the elephants came on March 23 and 24, destroying some 3,000 of his banana plants.

The losses were incalculable, he added.

According to another orchard owner, elephants were known to appear in Kahang and it has been a problem for many years.

He said the recent floods in Johor may have cut off the herd’s route to other food sources, forcing them to encroach on their orchards.

The owner added that when the time comes for him to replant his trees, he will make sure the power to the electric fences are turned on to keep the elephants away.
