Longhouse fire leaves 300 homeless in Bintulu


BINTULU: A longhouse fire in Ulu Sebauh, Bintulu left 300 residents homeless on Thursday (March 20).

The State Fire and Rescue Department said that at about 11.10am, the Bintulu station was alerted to a fire affecting the 30-door longhouse, Rumah Lapie, Sungai Sinai.

"The longhouse has about 300 residents. Twenty-seven doors of the longhouse were completely burned down, while the other three doors were unaffected by the fire," it said.

There were no casualties except for a 70-year-old man who was rushed to the hospital with breathing difficulties.

A total of 37 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, which was about 34km from the station.

By the time they arrived, the fire was already at its height.
