JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has risen to 2,550 people from 707 families across five affected districts.

The Johor Disaster Management Committee said that as of 4pm on Thursday (March 20), the affected districts are Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Kulai and Kluang.

“Johor Baru still has the highest number of evacuees with 784 people, followed by Kota Tinggi (729), Kulai (506), Pontian (495) and Kluang (36).

“The number of temporary relief centres (PPS) in operation has also increased to 43,” it said in a statement on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Johor Baru mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said all flood victims within the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) jurisdiction would receive aid.

“We will provide them with food baskets and some cash to help ease the burden of relocating.

“We also urge those staying at the PPS to remain there until the situation is deemed safe and not attempt to return home prematurely,” he said.

He added that MBJB had launched its special emergency response team, Skuad Kilat, on Wednesday (March 19).

“They will ensure that all drainage systems are functioning smoothly and are not clogged.

“Any waste washed in by the floodwaters will also be cleared. We hope this small step will help prevent a larger-scale flood,” he said, adding that the floods in Johor Baru were caused by the ongoing high tide combined with continuous heavy rainfall.
