Tengku Zafrul will not rush to decide on Umno membership

KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz will not rush into making a decision with regards to his membership in Umno.

The Umno supreme council member said he will take heed of the recent advise given by party president Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi not to be hasty with his decision.

"Yes, I did meet the party president recently and we talked about my position in the party.

"I listened to his advise not to be hasty and we exchanged our respective views on the matter.

"For the time being, I will continue to engage with the president while also focusing on my ministerial duties," he told reporters when met after launching Madani Digital Trade here on Thursday (March 13).

On Wednesday (March 12), Ahmad Zahid said he had recently met Tengku Zafrul who expressed his intention to quit the party.

However, Ahmad Zahid said he told the Kota Raja Umno Division Chief not to rush into making a decision on the matter.

Asked about his meeting with Ahmad Zahid, Tengku Zafrul described it as "a good meeting" with "open discussions" between them.

"We both agreed that we must give proper consideration on the importance of making sure that whatever decision made, is one that is right for me and the party," he said.

Asked when he would make a decision, Tengku Zafrul quipped that to he will take "some time to think about it".

On February 9, it was reported that Tengku Zafrul is expected to make an announcement on his decision to leave Umno in the near future after meeting Ahmad Zahid.

This follows speculations that the senator may quit Umno following claims that his political future was uncertain.

In particular, one version suggested that Tengku Zafrul had been invited to join PKR.

In April last year, Tengku Zafrul, who is Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, quit as Selangor Umno treasurer, citing differences of opinion and lack of direction.
