PETALING JAYA: National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has lauded MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan’s decision to call off the debate with Zamri Vinoth.
The minister said Saravanan made the right decision in the interest of preserving national harmony and unity.
“This decision reminds us all about the importance of preserving unity amidst Malaysia’s diverse makeup of religions, cultures and races.
“Unity is not just a slogan but must be translated into action and our daily lives,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 11).
He expressed hope that the decision to call off the debate will serve as an example for all to continue strengthening unity efforts and practice mutual respect among one another.
Aaron said the principles of understanding, respect and acceptance play a crucial role in upholding unity in Malaysia.
“By taking an inclusive approach and practicing these principles, we will build a more harmonious and prosperous society,” he said, stressing the importance of preserving harmony in Malaysia.
Earlier Tuesday, Saravanan said he had decided not to go on with the debate with independent preacher Zamri.
The Tapah MP said he had made his decision in the interests of national harmony.
"I have discussed it and I have decided not to continue with the debate in the interest of national harmony," he said at a press conference earlier.
However, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer urged the people to continue lodging police reports against Zamri.
The independent preacher had earlier courted controversy over remarks about kavadi bearers during Thaipusam.
