KUALA LUMPUR: The private sector must learn from the government sector on ways to empower women in leadership and at the same time called for an increase in female participation within government-linked companies, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He noted that while the public sector has seen increasing female participation, with at least 30%, more can be achieved within government-linked companies.
"The companies should start evaluating why the total number of females in top leadership positions is small.
"If the government cannot prove that female participation in top leadership is possible, it will be harder for the private sector to adopt the same," he said during the launch of International Women's Day 2025 here on Saturday (March 5).
Anwar highlighted the importance of effective female leadership in voicing freedom and democracy.
"In ensuring the success of Malaysia Madani, it starts with the family's role by ensuring children's discipline aligns with the principles of science and harmony.
"So, the role of women is very integral in society and national development," he added.
During the event, Anwar also launched the National Women’s Policy, acknowledging room for improvement and urging all ministries to ensure the implementation of policies and action plans for female empowerment.
Also present was Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Nancy Shukri.
She urged that women’s empowerment be prioritised as a key agenda in national development to build an inclusive and progressive Malaysia.
She added that this should be achieved through strategic measures to boost women’s involvement in key decision-making roles and shape the nation's direction.
In a press conference, Nancy echoed Anwar’s call for collective action among all ministries and NGOs in female empowerment.
