Govt mulls AI and blockchain to enhance halal checks

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is exploring the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technologies to enhance real-time monitoring of international halal certification bodies.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar (pic) told the Dewan Rakyat that these technologies could help ensure that halal certifications issued by foreign agencies comply with the standards set by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

“AI allows for automatic analysis of compliance data, identifying certification inconsistencies and issuing warnings of non-compliance.

“Blockchain technology ensures that each stage of the halal supply chain is recorded and verified in a transparent and immutable manner, enhancing monitoring efficiency and integrity,” he said during question time in Parliament yesterday.

Mohd Na’im was responding to a supplementary question from Tumpat MP Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi, who asked whether the government would consider using the latest technology to improve halal certification oversight.

He added that Jakim and related agencies could work with international certification bodies to integrate this system, strengthening Malaysia’s position as a global leader in halal monitoring technology.

Separately, Mohd Na’im said Jakim would examine the use of AI as a source for Islamic teachings and laws, saying: “The implementation in determining the hukum (Islamic law) will also be taken into consideration.”
