Govt looking at possible amendments to Sosma, says Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: The government is looking into possible amendments to the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012 to bring it in line with the government's reform agenda, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said several aspects were being reviewed following discussions at Cabinet level.

In particular offences that would allow bail were among the matters being looked at.

"More importantly is Section 13 which is on bailable, non-bailable and unbailable offences. There are 73 offences under Section 13 which states that as long as an arrest is made under Sosma, bail cannot be granted.

"We are currently studying the 73 offences and we will suggest several where the power to grant bail can be returned to the courts," said Saifuddin Nasution.

Another issue being looked at is detention until the legal process is fully completed.

On the use of artificial intelligence (AI), he said that the ministry would need to keep up with the times.

He added that AI was being implemented in ways to "solve the problems of the rakyat".

"That is why I have implemented the slogan 'AI for KDN, KDN for AI'. The logic is simple; the ministry has no choice but to embrace AI.

"We are talking about utilising AI to solve the problems of the people linked to delivery services from the ministry" he said.

Also in attendance were Star Media Group chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng and Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.
