Cameron Highlands records rising temperatures


KUALA LUMPUR: Cameron Highlands temperatures have shown an increasing trend, especially in the last 10 years, based on meteorological data records from 1969 to 2024, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Wednesday (Feb 26).

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said 2024 made history as the hottest year in Pahang’s famous tourism destination with an average daily temperature reaching 18.91 degrees Celsius.

"This is an increase of 0.86 degrees Celsius compared to the long-term average daily temperature (1991 to 2020), which is 18.05 degrees Celsius.

"The highest temperature ever recorded in Cameron Highlands was 27.9 degrees Celsius in May 1998 while the lowest temperature was 10 degrees Celsius in February 1989," he said in reply to Tan Kar Hing (PH-Gopeng) who wanted to know the statistics on climate change and landslide occurrence in Cameron Highlands.

Huang said there were 689 landslide incidents recorded in Cameron Highlands from 1961 to date.

"The Minerals and Geosciences Department had been tasked with implementing the Slope Hazard and Risk Map Production Project which had identified 45 critical high-risk slopes in Cameron Highlands.

"As a result, five locations in Cameron Highlands have been installed with early warning system equipment and all information gathered is shared with relevant agencies and departments for slope management and mitigation as well as preparedness in facing geological landslides," he added. - Bernama
