Asean Defence Ministers gather in Penang for retreat

GEORGE TOWN: The Asean Defence Minister Meeting retreat kicked off on Tuesday (Feb 25) in Batu Ferringhi.

The ADMM Retreat was held in conjunction with the Asean Defence Ministers Meeting 2025 in Kuala Lumpur that is scheduled for November.

The first bilateral meeting on Tuesday is scheduled to take place at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort between Malaysian and Brunei delegation at about 2pm.

At 10am earlier, Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin attended a walkabout at the hotel to check on the preparations for the retreat at the hotel compound.

Security at the resort was strict, with media personnel and delegation officials gathering at the lobby as early as 8am to collect their passes.

More than 150 delegates from 10 Asean member states, Timor-Leste and the Asean Secretariat are expected to attend the retreat.

The official ADMM retreat is expected to begin at about 9am on Wednesday (Feb 26).

The inaugural ADMM took place in Kuala Lumpur on May 9, 2006, and has since evolved into a strong platform for strategic discussions, consultations, and practical collaboration.
