TAR UMT’s success due to dedication from pioneers and staff, says Chan

KUALA LUMPUR: The achievements of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) would not have been possible without the dedication of its faculty and staff, says Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy.

"For 56 years, our educators have tirelessly nurtured and guided generations of students. Today, TAR UMT stands as a beacon of innovation, inclusivity, and academic excellence," said the TAR UMT Board of Governors and Alumni Council chairman.

He noted that since its establishment on Feb 24, 1969, as Tunku Abdul Rahman College, the institution has grown significantly, expanding its academic offerings, upgrading facilities, and setting up branches in five states.

"What began as a modest endeavour has become a distinguished university, producing graduates who make meaningful contributions both locally and globally," Chan said at the university's Foundation Day celebration on Monday (Feb 24).

He paid tribute to the visionaries and pioneers whose dedication laid the foundation for TAR UMT.

"Despite facing tough challenges, they remained steadfast in their mission to provide high-quality yet affordable education for all Malaysians.

"The founders of this institution were true leaders of the people, and their legacy continues to inspire us to strive for greater heights," he added.

Reflecting on the significance of Foundation Day, Chan noted that while it is impossible to relive the excitement and enthusiasm of that historic day 56 years ago, the community can gain insight into its history through a special docudrama.

"I am sure many of you are aware of The Story of TARCians, TAR UMT's very own docudrama. I am pleased that the film will be screened here after this ceremony, with several more screenings scheduled until Feb 28 this year.

"The Story of TARCians resonates deeply with many of us, including myself, who have dedicated our lives to TAR UMT. I hope many TARCians will take the opportunity to watch it," he said.

He expressed gratitude to faculty, staff, alumni, and students, emphasising their role in the university’s success.

"To our alumni, your success is our greatest pride. To our students, you are the torchbearers of our legacy. Embrace opportunities, uphold our values, and make your mark in the world," he added.

The celebration also featured the unveiling of TAR UMT’s new mascot, TARC Buddy, a symbol of the institution’s strength, resilience, and enduring spirit.

Members of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of TARC Education Foundation Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Datin Paduka Tan Siok Choo, Datuk Seri Yew Teong Look, TAR UMT Board of Governors member, Datuk Chong Sin Woon, Datuk Dr Gue See Sew, Ts. Dr Mohamad Kamal Harun, Tan Soy Mok and TAR UMT president Prof Dato' Indera Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei.
