Jasin cops nab lorry driver for suspected illegal harvesting of mangrove wood


JASIN: Police here have arrested a lorry driver suspected of being involved in the illegal harvesting of mangrove wood in the Ayer Tawar-Sebatu mangrove forest, here.

Jasin OCPD Supt Mohamad Rusli Mat, said that the 44-year-old suspect was apprehended at 6.30pm on Tuesday (Feb 18) following a public tip-off.

He said his men intercepted the lorry carrying a load of mangrove wood believed to have been unlawfully obtained from the protected area.

"A total of 145 mangrove logs, estimated to be worth between RM2,500 and RM3,000, were found in the lorry," he said on Wed (Feb 19).

Supt Mohamad Rusli added that the suspect has been handed over to the Melaka Forestry Department for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the National Forestry Act 1984.
