Alor Setar MP urges govt to crack down on 'Dark Side' accounts on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: An MP has called on authorities to clamp down on "DS (Dark Side) " online accounts where young Malaysians are prostituting themselves.

The issue was raised by Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Setar), who claimed that such accounts were being used openly by some youths.

"It has become a trend among some youths to engage in immoral activities and modern day forms of prostitution.

"Previously, those engaging in such activities would do it in the dark alleys but they are now doing it openly live on TitTok.

"They are showing off and selling their bodies to fulfil the lust of others for profit," he said when debating the motion of thanks on the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday. (Feb 18)

He questioned why such individuals were still active on social media and their contents not taken down.

"If the contents of politicians which are not alinged with the government can be blocked, why not these contents?" he asked.

Afnan lamented the decline of morals among the youths, citing the case where a well-known influencer was charged in court for sexual activities on a DS site but treated as a celebrity by the youth.

Although applauding the police for their recent operations against such online activities, he said there are more than 20 Dark Side accounts still active.

"You can visit the accounts but if you want to see more, you have to pay.

"And if it's free, you don't get to see much," he said.

He said he was asked to visit the site but declined, saying only that he merely reported them to the authorities.

"I have not patronised these accounts but those laughing at me must have," he responded to giggles coming from MPs in the House.

He added that it was recently reported that some university students are sharing homes with the opposite sex and involved with immoral activities.

He said they did so as they cannot afford to pay rent.

He urged the authorities to take stern action to clamp down on such online activities before they becomes a norm among the younger generation here.
