Cops and ministry probing travel agency

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 100 police reports have been lodged against a travel agency over some RM3mil in losses in connection with allegedly dubious umrah packages.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating; some of the 141 reports have also been referred to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.

“The company is registered and licensed by the ministry to conduct umrah activities from 2023 until 2027, as such, some of the police reports have been referred to them.

“They are responsible for taking action under the Tourism Industry Act 1992,” he said.

Despite that, Comm Ramli said the investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code is still being conducted against the company.

“We are aware that several activists have given the impression that no investigations were conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Such a statement is not only untrue, it is also irresponsible,” he said.
