Apology not enough, says Umno Youth chief in urging legal action against corn seller in racist controversy

PETALING JAYA: Apologies will not suffice and legal action should be taken against those who spew racist remarks, says Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh.

"It doesn't matter who they are, legal action should be initiated so that it could be a lesson to all," the Umno Youth leader said in a Facebook post on Monday (Feb 17).

"If not this culture of 'do first, apologise later' will be prevalent and people can easily get off the hook," he added.

Dr Akmal was responding to the issue of a corn seller who apologised after sparking controversy over a racially insensitive signboard.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the trader had apologised and pledged not to repeat the act in future.

The apology was made in a restaurant in Sepang on Sunday (Feb 16), attended by representatives of the Indian community, influencers, local residents, officials from the National Unity Department and the police.
