Job scams: Foreign Ministry in contact with Thai authorities on rescued Malaysians

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok is working closely with Thai authorities to verify the identities of 15 Malaysians rescued from job scam syndicates in Myanmar.

In a media advisory on Friday (Feb 14), the Malaysian Foreign Ministry stated that all 261 individuals, including 15 Malaysians who have been saved, are currently housed at Fort Vachiraprakan military camp and will undergo screening under the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) in Thailand before being repatriated to their respective home countries.

"Once approval is obtained from the Thai authorities, the Embassy of Malaysia will conduct a consular visit to provide the necessary assistance, including contacting their next of kin and facilitating their repatriation to Malaysia," the statement read.

The ministry will continue to work closely with the Thai authorities on the matter and remains committed to providing consular assistance to the affected Malaysians.

On Wednesday, Bernama reported that 15 Malaysians were among foreign victims of call centre syndicates in Myawaddy, Myanmar, who were released by Myanmar authorities and sent to Thailand for deportation.

Myanmar authorities rescued the victims from KK Park and Shwe Kokko, two border towns notorious for human trafficking activities, before transferring them to Thailand for further processing and eventual repatriation to their home countries. – Bernama
