GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s multicultural heritage took centre stage last night when the Baba-Nyonya community gathered for the Chap Goh Meh parade.

The event, organised by the State Chinese (Penang) Association to mark the last day of Chinese New Year celebrations, underscored the state’s deep-rooted traditions and cultural diversity.

A stunning display of Peranakan heritage was a highlight, captivating spectators with a dazzling exhibition of traditional Peranakan costumes.

The Nyonyas were showcasing their intricately-embroidered baju kebaya while the Baba were introducing their colourful batik attire, all set to the rhythmic beats of the Dondang Sayang.

The kebaya was inscribed in 2024 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the achievement, secured through collaboration between Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, underscored the kebaya’s role as a cultural symbol that transcends national boundaries.

“This is a proud moment not only for the Peranakan community but for all of us who value and uphold our cultural heritage,” he said.

He said Penang’s role as a melting pot of cultures, where heritage and modernity coexist harmoniously, is reflected in the vibrant festivals celebrated throughout the year, from the miao hui (temple festival) and Pai Thee Kong Festival (Jade Emperor’s birthday) to Thaipusam and the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“These are not just events but living traditions that connect generations, strengthen our identity and foster unity in our diverse society,” he said in his speech before flagging off two colourful floats and a dondang sayang bus.

He said Chap Goh Meh, often called Chinese Valentine’s Day, symbolises new beginnings, hope and love, and is celebrated with the age-old tradition of tossing mandarin oranges into the sea to signify aspirations for romance and prosperity.

“Preserving cultural heritage is not just about safeguarding the past but ensuring its relevance for future generations,” he added.

He emphasised that culture and tradition are dynamic and must be nurtured as society progresses, highlighting that Chap Goh Meh continues to be a significant celebration that unites communities, reinforcing values of unity, resilience and shared heritage.

Chow expressed his hopes for Penang as it embraces the year ahead, calling on the people to take pride in their heritage and continue to build a culturally vibrant, socially cohesive and economically progressive society.

State Chinese (Penang) Association president Datuk Seri Tan Gin Soon said the bus and floats proceeded from the association premises on Perak Road to the Esplanade before heading to Gurney Bay, where they stopped for the public, especially tourists, to take pictures with the Baba and Nyonya participants in their colourful costumes.

“This is the 40th year that we have participated with our floats,” he noted while encouraging unmarried people to participate in the tradition of tossing oranges (for females) and drums (for males) to find a good spouse.
