Biker dies making illegal entry into underpass, ramming car

GEORGE TOWN: A 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed after he rode into the Udini Underpass in Jalan Masjid Negeri (Green Lane) and collided with an oncoming car in the opposite direction.

George Town OCPD ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the victim is believed to have lost control of his motorcycle during the incident at 7.30am on Wednesday (Feb 12).

"It is believed that the motorcyclist lost control before entering the path of a car coming from the opposite direction.

"The 46-year-old woman driving the car was not injured, but an 11-year-old passenger suffered injuries to her hand," said ACP Abdul on Thursday.

He added that the motorcyclist who suffered serious injuries was sent to Penang Hospital and confirmed dead at 1.10am on Thursday.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In a 16-second CCTV footage of the incident, the motorcyclist was seen riding down the curve in the underpass when he skidded and crashed into the oncoming car.

The impact shattered the motorcycle into pieces and caused the car to subsequently hit the wall next to it.

Various signs have been placed at the entrance to the underpass prohibiting motorcycles from using it.

Despite the warnings, many motorcyclists are known to still use the underpass as a shortcut to avoid heavy traffic at the roundabout intersection above it.
