Abang Jo: Sarawak plans setting up contemporary leadership institute to train future leaders

KUCHING: Sarawak plans to set up an institute on contemporary leadership to train future leaders with strategic foresight, trustworthiness and inclusivity, says Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

He said the institute would be spearheaded by the Institute of Management Sarawak (Masa), with training programmes and research to be provided by the Malaysian Research and Education Foundation (MyREF).

Masa and MyREF signed a memorandum of collaboration on Dec 4 last year, marking the first step towards institutionalising the concept of contemporary leadership.

"I am pleased to announce that the Leadership Institute, dedicated to advancing contemporary leadership, will become a reality in Sarawak.

"This institute will be the driving force in shaping the next generation of leaders who are strategic in vision, trusted in governance and inclusive in action," Abang Johari said in his keynote address at the Contemporary Leadership International Summit here on Tuesday (Feb 11).

He said contemporary leadership was built on strategic foresight, trustworthiness and inclusivity, enabling leaders to anticipate challenges, maintain public confidence and empower others.

"In Sarawak, our strategic vision has driven economic growth and digital transformation, placing the state ahead in innovation and sustainability.

"Our inclusive policies ensure economic and infrastructural development which reaches every corner of the state," he said.

As such, Abang Johari said the Leadership Institute would develop capable and ethical leaders for the future.

"Strategic foresight will be at the core of its programmes, training leaders to anticipate challenges and navigate uncertainty with confidence.

"Trustworthiness will be embedded in its leadership frameworks while inclusivity will guide its outreach, ensuring that leadership is diverse, representative and accessible to all communities, irrespective of race and religion," he said.
