PUTRAJAYA: Refer to the latest statement on Muslims attending non-Muslim ceremonies and events, says Fahmi Fadzil.
“Please refer to the statement issued,” the Communications Minister said when asked on further clarification if the guidelines are mandatory or not during the weekly post-Cabinet press conference here, Friday (Feb 7).
When asked about the atmosphere of Cabinet when discussing the matter, Fahmi said it was confidential.
“Everything that happened during the Cabinet meeting is a major secret. If I reveal it here, (the Cabinet meeting) is stipulated under Official Secrets Act,” the government spokesman said.
He added that those who needed further clarification on the guidelines could refer to either the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) or the National Unity Ministry.
“You can refer to the statement. As they (the ministries) are coordinated, they had issued the joint-statement today,” he added.
Earlier Friday, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar stressed the importance of inclusivity in decision-making.
The statement added that the government has reaffirmed that any policy formulation must prioritise national unity and receive Cabinet approval, following concerns over proposed guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim festivities and funerals.
On Feb 6, Na’im revealed that new guidelines were in the works for Muslims attending non-Muslim festivities and funerals, adding that the guidelines were advisory in nature and aimed at fostering "social and cultural" harmony in Malaysia’s multi-religious society.
