Cabinet: National unity must be prioritised in policy decisions

PETALING JAYA: The government has reaffirmed that any policy formulation must prioritise national unity and receive Cabinet approval, following concerns over proposed guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim festivities and funerals.

In a joint statement on Friday (Feb 7), National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar stressed the importance of inclusivity in decision-making.

“The Cabinet emphasised that any policy must take national unity into account and obtain prior approval before being implemented,” they said.

The ministers also emphasised the need for inclusive discussions that respect the sensitivities of all communities to foster greater harmony.

Earlier, the Cabinet agreed that the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) could offer advice to Muslims on safeguarding their faith concerning participation in non-Muslim celebrations and events.

“Given that this matter has caused confusion among Malaysians of various races, ethnicities, and religions, the Cabinet has agreed that Jakim may guide Muslims. However, this advice does not constitute official policy,” the statement read.

During its meeting on Friday, the Cabinet examined the confusion surrounding the proposed guidelines, which arose following inquiries from Muslims regarding invitations to events organised by non-Muslim communities that may involve religious elements.
