General worker claims trial to causing grievous hurt to man using machete


IPOH: A general worker at a car rental company has been charged at a Sessions Court here with causing severe injuries to a man using a machete, resulting in a severed left hand.

K. Karan, 25, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial before judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad here on Thursday (Feb 6).

According to the charge sheet, Karan had intentionally caused injuries to L. Nadesan, 30, on Jalan Institute Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia in Tanjung Rambutan near here at about 11am on June 23 last year.

The charge framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons, carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or whipping upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor NM Moganaraj Mithra requested the court to set bail at RM15,000.

Karan’s lawyer J.K Kala said her client earned RM1,700, and was supporting his younger sister and an older brother who were studying at higher education institutions.

“He is an orphan, and not married. I request the court to set bail at RM5,000,” she said.

Ainul Shahrin set bail at RM4,000 with one surety, and fixed March 10 as the next mention date.

In a Magistrate’s Court, Karan together with five others were charged with rioting under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

The other five are N. Kumaresan, 30, R. Navinthiran, 34, S. Kalidas, 28, G.Loghendraan, 28 and Mohd Omar Din Syed Mobamad Khan, 29.

Kala represented all six of them.

According to the charge sheet, the six on the same date, time and place, together with eight others still at large had carried out a riot by using machetes, wood and hoes as weapons to attack.

If found guilty, they can be sentenced to five years jail, fine or both.

Karan pleaded not guilty to the charge, and claimed trial, while the five others pleaded guilty.

Magistrate S. Punitha fixed bail at RM2,000 with one surety for Karan and set March 10 for next mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Vatchira Wong Rui Fern asked for a deterrent sentence for the five who pleaded guilty as a lesson to never commit such a crime that had caused injuries and damaged vehicles.

The five were fined RM2,500 in default five months’ jail.

All of them paid the fines, and Karan posted bail.
